German government to send 100 more troops to Kurdistan Region, to train Kurdish Peshmerga forces to fight the Islamic State (IS) militants.
German media are reporting that the government to ask its Bundestag lower parliament to consider a mandate on Wednesday, that would approve the deployment of a further 100 soldiers to Erbil.
The troops would be in the Kurdistan Region capital on a purely training basis, joining the few Bundeswehr soldiers already instructing Peshmerga in the use of weapons that have been arriving from Germany since August.
They are also expected to give advice and training in areas such as demining. They have been focusing training so far on weaponry such as the Milan anti-tank systems.
They new proposal comes after a German delegation met official in Baghdad and Erbil.
