Erbil International General Terminal is Kurdistan and Iraq’s first international coach terminal. Recently opened in Erbil, Kurdistan’s capital, it is located on a street near Family Mall.
The terminal aims to simplify travel while gathering a large selection of travel agencies in one place.
The general assistant manager of the terminal, Rafi Mirkhan told BasNews that Darin Group Company built the terminal in collaboration with the Kurdistan region’s Ministry of Planning.
He said that Darin Group had recognized some time ago that the Kurdistan Region was in need of such a terminal, which has been built to the very latest international standards.
“The terminal is modern and it has created job opportunities for people who were jobless before, as well as easing the process of coach travel,” said Mirkhan.
People can use the terminal to travel to cities located on the Hamilton Road such as Shaqlawe, Pirmam, Soran, Haji Omaran, Koya, and internationally to Turkey, Iran and Georgia. However, people cannot as yet go to the cities of Baghdad, Mosul and Sulaymaniyah via the terminal.
“Drivers and passengers are currently satisfied with the routes available.” said Mirkhan.
Many travel agencies have opened offices in the terminal which is seeing an increasing number of passengers daily.
Addressing future plans, Mirkhan said, “We are aiming to expand international transport options and enable people to travel to more countries than those offered at the moment.”
The location of the terminal has not pleased everyone however, with some passengers and drivers claiming it is difficult to reach. Officials disagree, saying that the it’s both an appropriate and trouble free location.
The previous location was unable to cope with winter weather conditions and was not particularly accessible.
All drivers working from the terminal are licensed and regularly checked.
