In January, 2007 the company signed an agreement with the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA) for the acquisition of a 3rd Generation license. The agreement will enable Vodafone Egypt to significantly increase its spectrum range and offer an unprecedented range of high-rate data transfer services for its rapidly-expanding customer base as well as introduce the latest 3G applications such as video telephony, mobile TV, video on demand, full track music downloads, and 3G broadband services for the enterprise segment.

The investment on the part of Vodafone Egypt represents but one of several thoroughly-researched commitments made by the company to simultaneously fuel its short and long-term growth. In September 2006, the company’s general assembly approved the acquisition of 51 percent of Raya Telecom, a corporate communication leader, to broaden even further the range of communication services provided by Vodafone Egypt to the enterprise segment.

Vodafone Egypt’s market leadership continued to gain in stature with Telecom Egypt’s decision to increase its stake in the company from 25.5 percent to 44.7 percent in October 2006 through a stock market buyout. Vodafone Group continues to hold 54.9 percent controlling stake in Vodafone Egypt and is pleased to work with such a strong local partner. Majority government-owned Telecom Egypt is the country’s sole landline operator.

Vodafone Egypt now boasts a team of almost 3000 employees serving more than 8.7 million customers (December 2006) nationwide.
