Telecom Egypt (TE) is the incumbent fixed line operator in Egypt. The company also operates Internet services through its 95.04% owned subsidiary TE Data, and mobile services through its 44.79% subsidiary Vodafone Egypt (VE). The company was established in 1998 to replace the former Arab Republic of Egypt National Telecommunication Organisation (ARENTO). ARENTO was renamed TE and transformed into a joint stock company with the purpose of establishing, maintaining and operating local telecoms networks, including those with international links.
Until the end of 2005, TE had a monopoly on fixed line national and international calls. Although the fixed line market is officially open to competition, no other operators have entered the market so far.
