The USD 550 million Sohar power and desalination plant was inaugurated in December 2007 and is now able to deliver 585 megawatts of power while the desalination plant delivers 33 million gallons of drinking water per day. The electricity and water are provided to the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP) under a 15-year power and water purchase agreement. Plant operations and maintenance are the subject of a 15-year contract with Sohar Operation and Maintenance Company LLC (SOMC), a separate organisation owned by Suez Energy International and Sogex Oman. Eventually, 35 per cent of the shares in Sohar Power Company will be offered to the public by the founders as agreed with the Ministry of Finance.
