He has an M.Phil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies from St. Antony's College, Oxford and a B.A. in History and Near Eastern Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. He speaks Arabic and Persian.

Now a freelance journalist and broadcaster, he regularly comments on Middle East affairs for Sky Television , More 4 News and the British Forces Broadcasting Service .
